Best Wishes to the newly elected Boulder Valley School Board

Jeffrey Anderson: BVSD is facing significant challenges in the future. I thank all those who supported my campaign and I wish the newly elected board members the best in facing those challenges.

Schools should provide a quality education that prepares students for life after high school. We have to make sure schools are safe, supportive, and teaching factual information.

Schools must be a place of safety

Transparent, compassionate, data-driven decision making is important to retain trust in our newly elected school board.

Parents, teachers and our greater community are our most important assets in addressing the challenges we face which includ:

*Fostering a safe and engaging education environment so all students can succeed

*Declining enrollment and unpredictable funding

*The ever-increasing role of AI and technology, both for good and for bad, in our schools and community

Service to BVSD: By The Numbers

4 Years: Co-chair Long Range Advisory Committee

8 Years: District Accountability Committee Chair; Chair of 3 subcommittees

5 Years: Onsite school review teams

18 Years: School Accountability Committees

8 Years: Mentoring Science Research Seminar students

22 years: Judging Regional Science Fairs Fair

I believe my involvement in the District makes me uniquely positioned to address the challenges that BVSD is facing over the next 4 years using evidence based, data driven solutions.

Personal and Professional Background

I have a Phd from Princeton University in atmospheric and oceanic sciences and a masters degree in computer science. I am honored to have the support of current and former BVSD School Board Members, state legislators, city council members and an endorsement from Rocky Mountain Equality Action fund. Please check out my endorsement page for a list of supporters.

Most recently, I have served as the co-chair oft the BVSD Long Range Advisory Committee (LRAC) since its formation in 2022. Declining enrollment was a major reason for the formation of this committee. Check out the article.

Using guidance from the current Board, our committee helped create policies which led to the new Environmental STEAM focus program for Heatherwood Elementary. I am hopeful it will help this unique neighborhood school address some of their enrollment challenges. Check out the article.

When our family arrived in Louisville, Colorado I jumped into service at Fireside Elementary on their School Accountability Committee where I was a member for 7 years. I served on the Fairview School Accountability Committee for 5 years and the Boulder School Accountability Committee for 6. I was a member of the BVSD District Accountability Committee (DAC) for 8 years including one year as the chair. I was the chair of the DAC Accountable Programs subcommittee and served on the DAC Standing Committee on Assessment. I served on a Charter School Application Review Committee and was the parent representative for On-Site Reviews for 5 elementary, middle and high schools.

I have been a BVSD Regional Science Fair Junior and Senior Division Judge for 22 years. I have also judged at elementary school and state science fairs. I have been on the Boulder High Bartlett STEM Scholarship Selection Committee since 2013.

Serving as a BVSD Science Research Seminar mentor allows me to interact directly with students in high school. Working with these students has been a great joy for me. This past year as part of BVSD’s environmental focus, I was asked to be part of the review team for the Colorado Seal of Climate Literacy for graduating seniors. I coached Math Olympiads at the elementary level for years.

Current Topics to Address

DISTRICT PARENT TEACHER INTERACTION

I have been made aware that there are some concerns about parent/school/teacher interactions that are not ideal. I am hoping to bring transparent, open dialog to the Board so that we can move forward in the best interests of our community and our children. Although we have different ways of meeting challenges, we should all be committed to solving problems together.

ACHIEVEMENT RESULTS

The School Board has received the results of our state testing. While we are making progress towards having all students at grade level, there is still lots of room to improve. Check out the article. If you are interested in the report, you can check out the report here. Because I have spent the past 24 years studying these issues, I am ready to “hit the ground running” and I believe I am poised to help the district “think outside the box” in order to form solutions to these challenges.

The Dolly Parton Imagination LIbrary Book program is dedicated to helping develop literacy in young children. If you who would like to help out with this program, please get involved with the Broomfield Rotary’s Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Book program. Click here for more information.

GUN SAFETY MUST BE A PRIORITY

Gun violence and the trauma it causes should be a serious concern for everyone. I was deeply saddened by the tragedy at Evergreen High School. Easy access to firearms for youth can lead to tragic results. If you own a firearm, you can obtain a gun lock free from the Boulder County Sheriff. Click here for a link.

MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE

Resources are available for students and teachers. The CU Anschutz START Clinic (Stress, Trauma, Adversity, Research and Treatment) provides trauma informed care and healing-centered approaches and is available ASAP.

If you are a student, please reach out to a trusted adult or mental health professional. You can also contact the START team directly.

If you are staff or someone who works directly with students who needs support, please contact the Colorado Educator Support group at Anschutz. All members of our educational workforce, including ALL staff — educators, classified staff, transportation workers, food services, and administrators are eligible for services. This group offers crisis response, individual support sessions, and presentations. If you are an educator and would like to get trained in the new Exgtreme Risk Protection Order law, you can sign up on the Colorado Attorney General’s Website. The ERPO Curriculum for Educators can be accessed on the COTRAIN website (opens new tab).

E BIKE SAFETY

Safe Schools also means arriving at school safely. As an avid biker myself, I am encouraged by the number of students who are able to use E-Bikes to travel to school. However, it is important that these students do so safely. BVSD has developed a policy to help parents teach their children about safe E-Bike use. Click here for the link.

📚 I am committed to advocating for quality education, school safety, and a bright future for BVSD!

A commitment to enhancing school safety and addressing declining enrollment resonates deeply with me. I believe a proactive approach will foster a safer and more engaging educational environment for our children, ensuring that every student feels valued and supported. I believe that my work over the past 24 years in BVSD and my expertise in the fields of data assimilation and artificial intelligence will ensure BVSD makes the best decisions possible to deliver a quality education for all students.

LGBTQ+ individuals are disproportionately impacted by a wide range of threats to their physical and mental health and face barriers when seeking health and wellness services because of systemic and institutional factors. This is exacerbated if the school community is not supportive. There is also an increased risk of suicide. If you know someone who needs help, please reach out to the following organizations: Rocky Mountain Equality, https://www.rmequality.org/health-wellness, Rise Against Suicide. https://www.riseagainstsuicide.org/
